New South Wales – RDI® Program Certified Consultant
Registered Occupational Therapist
I love working as a Relationship Development Intervention consultant and seeing the difference it makes for families. I have been working as a paediatric occupational therapist for over 20 years, but RDI fills a gap I was missing. Approximately half of the families I have worked with over the years have had a child or children with an autism spectrum disorder. I have worked in preschool and school settings, as well as with peak government and non-government therapy services. Soon after the Helping Children with Autism package gave therapy services for autism a boost, I joined an early intervention team specialising in autism spectrum disorders.
I established a private practice in October 2010 to give me the freedom to train as an RDI Program consultant. This decision was a response to hearing families lament that their child with autism could not form friendships and didn’t really engage with their parents or siblings in a reciprocal way. They were also often “stuck”, wanting to be in control and needing repetition and sameness. I am passionate about helping families foster their child’s interactions, relationships, flexibility and dynamic thinking.
I offer a mobile service so I can come to you if you are close by. I also work from the Paediatric Specialist Centre in Blacktown as needed. RDI and occupational therapy complement and inform each other, but RDI is a very different model of service delivery where I meet with the parents, rather than work directly with your child. However, I will also provide support and guidance in areas covered by occupational therapy for families doing RDI. Sometimes, this can include sessions with your child. I am also a provider of the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), a program that helps the listener’s sense of safety and availability for social engagement, as well as promoting more effective auditory processing.
